SUBGINGIVAL COLONIZATION
Basic Periodontal Pathology
This an electron microscopic image of a bucco lingual section from the gingiva and tooth in a dog with early gingivitis. A thin dental plaque can be seen extending around 0.5 to 1 mm below the gingival margin. In the adjacent tissues a local inflammatory reaction can be observed. The pocket epithelium demonstrate proliferations into the connective tissue. The pocket as well as the junctional epithelium have large intercellular spaces pointing to the increased permeability of these epithelia when inflammation is present.
This a light microscopic image of a bucco lingual section from the gingiva and periodontium in a dog with naturally occurring periodontal disease. The tooth surface is covered by a thick layer of calculus. On the top of the calculus there is a layer of subgingival plaque extending far into the dentogingival region. Lateral to the plaque a dense cuff of leukocytes is present and in the center of the leukocyte accumulation a small abscess is located. The pocket and junction epithelia are thickened and in the connective tissue collagen has disappeared in the vicinity of the dento-gingival epithelium.
