SUBGINGIVAL BACTERIA
Basic Periodontal Pathology
Scanning microscopic image of normal periodontium on a tooth extracted due to periodontal abscess. The location of the selected picture stems from an area distant to the advancing front of periodontal destruction. Thick fiber bundles of well organized collagen fibrils can be noted.
Scanning microscopic image of the root surface of a tooth extracted due to periodontal abscess. The location of the selected picture stems from an area close to the destruction line of the periodontitis. Strands of remaining collagen and partially dissolved connective tissue components can be observed. The image does not reveal sign of bacterial invasion into the partially destructed periodontal membrane.
Scanning microscopic image of the root surface of a tooth extracted due to periodontal abscess. The location of the selected picture stems from an area bordering the destruction line of the periodontitis. Fragments of remaining collagen and partially dissolved connective tissue components can be observed. The image does not reveal sign of bacterial invasion into the partially distracted periodontal membrane.
Scanning microscopic image of the root surface of a tooth extracted due to periodontal abscess. The location of the selected picture stems from an area on the microbial side close to the destruction line of the periodontitis. Numerous spirochetes organisms are present and single cocci or rod shaped microbes are found unevenly distributed among the spirochetes. No remnants of the connective tissue can be observed and the cemental surface is entirely covered with microorganisms.
Scanning microscopic image of the root surface of a tooth extracted due to periodontal abscess. The location of the selected picture stems from an area approximately 2 mm distant to the destruction line of the periodontitis. A colony of filamentous organisms is present and an a few other bacterial types can be seen.
Scanning microscopic image of the root surface of a tooth extracted due to periodontal abscess. The location of the selected picture stems from an area close to the gingival margin. Filamentous organisms covered by cocci predominate- Corncob formations.
