Basic Periodontal Pathology
64 year old female with severe periodontal disease in the lower front teeth. The probing pocket depths are 5-8 mm. At initial examination bleeding and pus flow are observed following gentle probing of the gingival margin. The image illustrate a prominent symptom of pathology at severe periodontal disease.
Light microscopic image of a bucco-lingual section of tooth and gingiva in a dog with naturally occurring periodontitis. A thick layer of calculus covers the tooth surface and on top of the calculus a layer of dental plaque reside. The plaque extend deep into the dento-gingival region. Lateral to the surface of the plaque a heavy accumulation of leukocytes can be seen. In the center of the leukocyte cuff a micro abscess can be noted. The abscess also involve a part of the pocket epithelium. The destruction of the gingival and periodontal tissues seem to relate to the release of tissue damaging substances from the leukocytes and the inflammatory processes.
