Basic Periodontal Pathology
A 45 year old female with a moderate periodontal disease at the approximal sites and gingivitis without obvious attachment loss at the buccal surfaces. The gingiva around the teeth bleed upon gentle probing and the tissues demonstrate swelling, loose consistency and redness. The symptoms are the cardinal signs of gingivitis - inflammation of the gingival margin.
Bucco-lingual section through the gingiva of an experimental dog with naturally occurring gingivitis. The image is obtained with an electron microscope. A thin dento-gingival plaque can be seen on the tooth surface to the left in the picture. The plaque forms a continuous mass from the supragingival area into the subgingival region. The epithelium lateral to the plaque contain rete peg formations and in the adjacent connective tissue inflammatory cells have accumulated.
